The Art and Science of Happiness: Patricia Dahlman - Fall exhibit in Douglass Library, Rutgers University

Mabel Smith Douglass Library Galleries
8 Chapel Drive, New Brunswick, NJ 08901
Gallery Hours M-F 9am - 4:30 pm; Weekends by Appointment

Patricia Dahlman's multimedia work was selected by a panel of visual arts professionals to provide a visual component to the Rutgers Institute for Research on Women's 2010-11 interdisciplinary seminar, "The Art and Science of Happiness." The theme explores how economic security, political stability, family, careers, health, community involvement, and other domains contribute (or not) to ones sense of being "happy." Dahlman's subject matter ranges across the political, social, and economic spectrums, while addressing issues of nature and society. She uses sewn and stitched forms made from canvas and colorful fabric to create both sculptural and 2-dimensioal works that are playful or serious, and sometimes both. The works selected for this exhibition include landscapes, abstract forms, narratives and figural works that comment on the environmental destruction in her community as well as recent political events in America. They represent her visions and hopes for an improved future for society and the world. These pieces also illustrate the University's 2010-11 Global Initiatives theme, "Ecologies in the Balance: The Way Forward."

Big Bambú

You know how we have all that bamboo lying around the studio, well I think I may have found a use for it...

Invited by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to create a site-specific installation for The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, the twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn (born in New Jersey in 1961) present their new work, Big Bambú: You Can't, You Don't, and You Won't Stop. The monumental bamboo structure, ultimately measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 50 feet high, takes the form of a cresting wave that bridges realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance. Visitors witness the continuing creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambú as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, Big Bambú suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism. It is the thirteenth-consecutive single-artist installation on the Roof Garden.

job opportunity

I am in need of some assistance in passing the word to any reliable, hard-working artists that are looking for part time or full time work with Gander Mountain. We are currently looking to hire some creative, passionate people that can bring their talents to the table working as visual merchandisers in the retail field. I am immediately looking to hire a few people part time in the Harrisburg store who would be trained in the apparel department and groomed to be visual merchandisers with the potential to grow into a full time position. We are also looking for people interested in a full time position as a visual merchandiser but would need to relocate to Charleston, WV or Fredericksburg, VA and be able to commit to the position for a minimum of two years. The full time position is an hourly position with negotiable pay and full benefits with relocation costs covered by the company, basically a fantastic opportunity for any creative individual looking to start out their career with a successful company. If you know anyone that would be interested in either of these positions, please have them contact me so I can set up an interview as soon as possible. Being a Tyler alum, I wanted to bring these opportunities to my fellow artists first before I began recruiting elsewhere! If there are any questions please don't hesitate to contact me, this is the e-mail address that I would prefer inquiries to be directed to but feel free to call as well. Thank you for all your help and I hope all is well!
