textile arts center

I recently found out about the textile arts center in Brooklyn and thought I'd share. I haven't had a chance to visit them yet but they seem like a great organization. They have a weaving studio and surface design lab as well as a gallery space. Periodically they also take in interns so be sure to be on the look out if you are interested in such an opportunity. They seem to always have a ton of things going on from regularly scheduled classes to workshops and openings.

some things looming, a fiber arts community dedicated to the promotion of the art form in Berks County, PA and beyond is proud to present: Simply irRESISTible, an exhibition of all things textile incorporating resist dyeing techniques, September 12th-November 14th, 2010. If you work with wax or paste resist... or, a mechanical resist that manipulates the cloth such as tying or stitching... or yet another form of resist technique involving chemical agents that repel another type of dye printed over the top...or a technique all together different, yet resist-related... this exhibition is for you! All work must be original, one-of-a-kind, made by the artist submitting entry. Artists may submit up to a maximum of three images, completed within the last three years, to be in the exhibition. Due to space restrictions, 2-D work must be 40"x 40" or less, 3-D work on pedestals no larger than 18" x18"x 18". Freestanding works will be accepted. No large installations can be considered. Yardage is acceptable. Entry fee $25. All entries must be postmarked by July 16, 2010. Click Here to request a prospectus.

niche award competition

Now in its 21st year, the NICHE Awards competition recognizes exemplary work by talented U.S. and Canadian artists and craftspeople at the professional and student levels.
It is a great opportunity for exposure as a young artist.
The NICHE Awards contest opens May 15, while this semester’s students are completing their best work. Students have until September 31 to submit works created this year, but I encourage you to introduce the NICHE Awards to your students today, while they complete portfolios and before they leave your classes.
The finalists will display their creations during the largest wholesale craft show in the country, the Buyers Market of American Craft, February 18-21, 2011, in Philadelphia. The finalists and winners of the competition will receive tremendous press in NICHE magazine, a trade publication read by the owners and managers of craft and art galleries, and at our web site here.
Student finalists and winners receive:
- an opportunity to exhibit their work in a special exhibit at the Buyers Market
- a listing for the student and his/her school in the Winter issue of NICHE magazine
- coverage of the winners in the Spring issue of NICHE magazine
- continuing press coverage during and after the competition
- web promotions here

Last Work Day-End of Semester Dates

As a reminder, today is the last work day of the semester. All projects by non-majors must be removed from the studio by this Friday, May 7th, by 4:00. If you leave anything past that date it will be thrown away. Majors may leave their things in the majors space as long as it is stacked neatly on their table or put away in the lockers. No food may be left anywhere in the studio including lockers. Silkscreens belonging to majors may be left in the washout room over the summer but I would recommend cleaning off the emulsion. Have a nice summer!
