the main reason for our fibers trip to pittsburgh was to attend the opening and forum at fiberart international, which is always a wonderfully inspiring show and this year was no different. we attended the opening at the scc on friday night, which was very well attended with tons of great food and a blue grass band! on saturday morning, we attended the fiberart forum at the pittsburgh center for the arts to hear fiberart international 2010 juror, rebecca stevens, give a talk about fine textile art from a curators point of view. next, we checked out the rest of fiberart international, the center's extensive gift shop and the rest of the shows at pca (see pittsburgh: part II for pics). next, was a yummy lunch, which included the best brownie in the world and it was off to the mattress factory (see part II for pics). pictured above are the award winners of fiberart international, but the show is HUGE with tons more amazing work by some amazing artists. purchase the beautiful, comprehensive catalog of the show here or get your butt to pittsburgh to see the show, it's there until august and it's well worth the trip!

My intent is to capture transient states of existence that pass before we are fully cognizant of them. My images are inexhaustible narratives of color, shape, pattern, and texture intended to depict a complex web of relationships between objects, environment, and awareness. Patterns and forms rest in tense coexistence, supporting each other in an intricate system of the known and unknown. They are worlds rife with fleeting interactions and shifting spatial planes where time is unnaturally forced to stand still, poised on the brink of recognition and understanding.

Knitting Vandals!

Midnight Knitter Throwing Cape May for a Loop

Someone's knitting little sweaters all over town.

West Cape May authorities and residents are on the lookout for an unknown person, dubbed The Midnight Knitter, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

When darkness falls, the mystery knitter takes to the streets of the shore town and covers tree branches and lampposts with little sweaters.

Yes, you read that right, little sweaters.

And the knitter (or knitters) are displaying their wooly work on Facebookand a Web site.

Although residents and the town’s mayor agree that the colorful patterns are captivating and better than graffiti, the handiwork is illegal.

“We don’t know who it is,” Mayor Pam Kaithern told The Press. “Technically, they shouldn’t be doing it. The police are asking about it, but it’s fun and it’s a mystery.”

The town’s main concern? That when the yarn becomes faded, the cozy creations be taken down.

Wow, if this is West Cape May’s most pressing unsolved mystery, we’re thinking it’s time to move there.

This performance retrospective traces the prolific career of Marina Abramović (Yugoslav, b. 1946) with approximately fifty works spanning over four decades of her early interventions and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances, and collaborative performances made with Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen). In an endeavor to transmit the presence of the artist and make her historical performances accessible to a larger audience, the exhibition includes the first live re-performances of Abramović’s works by other people ever to be undertaken in a museum setting. In addition, a new, original work performed by Abramović will mark the longest duration of time that she has performed a single solo piece. (Please note: Abramović will not perform during MoMA Nights.) All performances, one of which involves viewer participation, will take place throughout the entire duration of the exhibition, starting before the Museum opens each day and continuing until after it closes, to allow visitors to experience the timelessness of the works. A chronological installation of Abramović’s work will be included in The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Gallery on the sixth floor of the Museum, revealing different modes of representing, documenting, and exhibiting her ephemeral, time-based, and media-based works. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue that includes an audio recording of the artist’s voice guiding the reader through the publication. Works in the exhibition are reperformed by: Maria José Arjona, Brittany Bailey, John Bonafede, Lydia Brawner, Rachel Brennecke (aka Bon Jane), Rebecca Brooks, Isabella Bruno, Hsiao Chen, Rebecca Davis, Angela Freiberger, Kennis Hawkins, Michael Helland, Igor Josifov, Elana Katz, Cynthia Koppe, Heather Kravas, Gary Lai, Abigail Levine, Jacqueline Lounsbury, Isabelle Lumpkin, Elke Luyten, Alexander Lyle, Justine Lynch, Tom McCauley, Nick Morgan, Andrew Ondrejcak, Tony Orrico, Will Rawls, Matthew Rogers, George Emilio Sanchez, Ama Saru, Jill Sigman, Maria S. Marina Abramović will not be performing The Artist Is Presentduring special Tuesday hours on April 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present exhibition will close at 5:30 p.m. during special late-night hours on April 22, 24, and 25.
