Our formal founding year is 1978 but our roots date back to the 1940s when Dirty Frank’s began inviting local art students to hang their work. The gallery embraces emerging artists, avant-garde forms, strong personal and political perspectives, and fresh ideas.

The Midwives Collective & Gallery is a 21st-century women’s collective formed for the purpose of fostering community art making, culture and the creation of art history by maintaining a public arena for the display and practice of innovative, emerging art.

My work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines, I translate scientific data related to ecology, climate change and meteorology into three-dimensional structures... The data I use is a combination of my own, which I gather on a daily basis using low-tech data-collecting devices, as well as regional or global data from the Internet. By staying true to the numbers, these woven pieces tread an uneasy divide between functioning both as sculptures in space as well as instruments that could be used in the actual environment from which the data originates... All of these efforts in the outdoors and in the studio ar driven by a desire to get a deeper glimpse into the complexity of behavioral interactions of living/non-living systems that make up or are influenced by weather. The ultimate purpose of this project is to gain a better understanding of what weather means in this age of human-induced climate change.

norman, 2008, 10x6x7, petunia, 2008, 11x8x5, buzz, 2008, 8x9x6
As fourth graders at Welsh Elementary School in Rockford, IL my classmate Kristin Henard and I co-authored and illustrated a book entitled The Two Friends. Xeroxed and stapled, this book tells the story of an eagle and a horse who meet in the wild and become friends. Two of the book’s illustrations, both simple line drawings, picture the eagle, Bushy-Tail, riding on the back of the horse, Cherokee. It was a start. While a fledgling adult artist in 1998, the Illinois Committee for the National Museum of Women in the Arts selected a beaded painting of mine called Flight of the Zebra for an exhibition. With a red bird perched on a zebra the images of Bushy-Tail and Cherokee were back. Still great friends, they had morphed into an explosion of texture and color, and both now sported human feet. Anthropomorphism had taken root.

Room-A-Loom.

A-Room-A-Loom is a site-specific weaving experiment. With consideration for the architecture of the gallery, the loom uses the building’s walls to turn a room into a simple machine. With the loom spanning the width and breadth of the space, there is no place to enter without becoming part of the planar field of yarn and donated materials. An invitation to bring your own materials and learn to weave will be extended to members of the SEA Change community, craft chat rooms, Portland culture websites and whoever happens to peek their head in our door to see what we are up to. This loom is a very simple incarnation of what can be a very complex craft, and people are thrilled to have the opportunity to pick up the basics so quickly and with so little pressure. Anyone can be taught how to weave on the A-Room-A-Loom in a matter of minutes. Participants often form new friendships while sharing stories about the materials they bring in.

Past A-Room-A-Looms in Los Angeles and Philadelphia have generated a curiosity for weaving and empowered the viewer to co-create a large-scale artistic project. Some past materials used have been: Dog fur, weeds from a neighbor’s garden, a blanket from distant travels, bubble wrap, the yellow pages, an ex-girlfriend’s pajamas, John Baldessari’s toilet paper, audio cassette tape, and tons of old clothes.

Back to Earth: Revisiting Magiciens de la Terre, at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery.

Back to Earth: Revisiting Magiciens de la Terre
October 15-December 5, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 17 from 2pm-5pm
back to earth

On the twentieth anniversary of Magiciens de la Terre, Fleisher/Ollman is pleased to announce Back to Earth, an homage to the groundbreaking 1989 exhibition that sought to address the problem, articulated by the show's curator, Jean Hubert-Martin, of "one hundred percent of exhibitions ignoring eighty percent of the earth."

Magiciens de la Terre, presented in Paris at the Pompidou Center and the Parc de la Villette, included work by fifty artists from the "centers" (United States and Western Europe) and 50 from the "margins" (Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Australia). It was the first exhibition to display such disparate artists-from superstars of the 1980s New York art scene to craftsmen living in secluded rural villages-on equal footing, and without the assumed superiority of Western art and culture.

Controversial when it opened, Magiciens de la Terre had lasting effects on the discourse of contemporary art, prompting a deeper conversation about the context, ritual, community, and function of global art-making. These topics remain wholly relevant today.

This seminal exhibition has served as a touchstone for Fleisher/Ollman, whose program seeks to break down distinctions between vernacular and academic art. Back to Earthacknowledges the contributions of Magiciens de la Terre by presenting the work of select artists included in the original exhibition, and speaks to the gallery's continuing curatorial goal of aesthetic and cultural bridge-building.

Artists in Back to Earth: Revisiting Magiciens de la Terre include:

John Baldessari (United States), Jose Bedia (Cuba), Alighiero e Boetti (Italy), Erik Boulatov (Russia), Louise Bourgeois (United States), Francesco Clemente (Italy), Bowa Devi (India), Alfredo Jaar (Chile), Kane Kwei (Ghana), Per Kirkeby (Denmark), Agbagli Kossi (Togo), Georges Liautaud (Haiti), Felipe Linares (Mexico), Henry Munyaradzi (Zimbabwe), Claes Oldenburg (United States), Sigmar Polke (Germany), Twins Seven Seven (Nigeria), Nancy Spero (United States), Acharya Vyakul (India), Zush (Spain).
